What Are the 3 Gun Safety Rules

Long time Burris shooter and living 3 Gun legend Patrick Kelley talks about the safety rules in 3 Gun and how following these rules can prevent you from being disqualified (and keep you safe).
By Patrick Kelley

1. Don't handle your firearm unless instructed to do so by the range officer.

2. In keeping with the firearm safety standard of treat every gun as if its loaded - always keep your firearms pointed in a safe direction with your finger off the trigger if you're not firing the weapon. This means obeying the rule of 180 degrees. You can point your firearm 90 degrees left of downrange, 90 degrees right, 90 degrees down and 90 degrees up for 180 degrees of safe direction in either the horizontal or vertical plane.

3. Finally, obey the rules of safe abandonment of your weapon. There can be match specific requirements that differ but generally, safe abandonment means the firearm is either empty and muzzle down in the containment apparatus (often a plastic drum or bucket) or with the safety on and placed muzzle down in the containment apparatus.

As always, listen to your RO (Range Officer or Range Safety Officer) and ask them questions if there's anything you're uncertain about. Good Luck and safe shooting!
